Karen Ali
The key to health and happiness? It’s all in the mind, according to Karen Ali. The former management consultant is living proof of the power of mental motivation. She lost two stone and transformed her own life when a crushing redundancy forced her to identify what was truly important to her; helping others to change their lives. After training as a life coach, she discovered she was a natural.
Three years on, as a trainer for the Mind Gym (www.themindgym.com), Ali gets frequent requests from such high-profile organizations as the BBC for her 90 minute corporate brain-boosting workouts. With private clients, the agenda is set by the individual – from finding more time in the day to finding a partner. It’s through gaining an understanding of your priorities and values, she explains, that she can help you achieve your goals.
Given her own triumphant battle of the bulge, weight-loss coaching is a strength. When Ali vowed to get fit, she could only manage two minutes on the treadmill, but built up one minute at a time until she was running for 45 minutes. But hers is not a on-approach-fits-all formula.
‘What works for me won’t necessarily work for you,’ she explains. ‘For me it was about setting goals and challenging myself. I try to understand what losing weight means to my clients, and why it’s important. Once you understand that, food choices become easier. No longer are we saying “I’ve got to follow this diet because I ought to”, we understand more deeply why it’s important; for some of my clients it’s self-confidence, for others it’s nurturing themselves. If you say yes to a Mars bar, ask yourself what you are saying no to? You may be saying yes to momentary delicious pleasure; but no to nurturing yourself, and making yourself healthy, fit and strong.’
