Karen Ali
‘I have a passion for what I do,’ says life coach and former management consultant Karen Ali, ‘and a strong belief in my clients, that they deserve the life they want and have the answers. If everyone had a coach, we wouldn’t just be dreaming about things, we’d be doing them. The point of coaching is that it arms you with tips that will sustain you for the rest of your life.’
Three years on, as a trainer for the Mind Gym (www.themindgym.com), Ali works with private clients with the agenda set by the individual – from finding more time in the day to finding a partner. In and initial ‘discovery session’ over the phone (Ali believes the anonymity allows people to be more honest), she helps you to identify the top five goals in all areas of your life while gaining a sense of your values. This is followed by getting at the heart of who her clients are, she says, that she can help them achieve their goals. Confidence, however, is crucial for everyone. ‘Once you have that, you can do anything.’
Her weight-loss coaching is a particular strength, but hers is not a one-approach-fits-all formula. ‘What works for me won’t necessarily work for you,’ she explains. ‘For me it was about setting goals and challenging myself. I try to understand what losing weight means to my clients. Once you understand that, food choices become easier. No longer are we saying: “I’ve got to follow this diet because I ought to”, we understand more deeply why it’s important; for some of my clients it’s self-confidence, for others it’s nurturing themselves. If you say yes to a Mars bar, ask yourself what you are saying no to? You may be saying yes to momentary delicious pleasure; but no to nurturing yourself, and making yourself healthy, fit and strong.’
