She begins with a discovery session, then coaches for three 40 minute sessions a month and provides support by email for a period of four months. ‘I decided ti try out a life coach to help me lose weight. It sounded like a lot of fun, and I wanted to finally trim down my figure after childbearing and breastfeeding had taken their toll. It’s all done on the telephone, which fits around the children perfectly.

‘My program began with a discovery session for an hour and a half, where Karen explained her coaching style and told me how she was going to get me to achieve my personal goals. It’s holistic, so you think of your life as a whole and what you want to achieve. I sat down with my husband and came up with my long-term goals in different areas. The introduction also includes 15 minutes of visualisation, where you relax and are taken ‘our of this world’ to visualise your future. This was really empowering.

‘Karen set my goals and gave me a food diary. I had to consider my emotions around food, think about healthy eating and about fun things to do with the kids. We came up with theme nights focusing on other countries and then cooking the food. I had to rate my hunger, and Karen told me to drink more, look at what was snacking on, and consider my portion sizes.

‘We also talked about the fitness aspect. I had been doing a lot of swimming and I wanted to try yoga, too. Karen gave me tips like parking as far away from the entrance to places I was going to, and trying to walk up and down the stairs 20 times a day. It was fascinating and I felt really liberated.

“My sessions are now 45 minutes a week, but I can also email mid-week to tell Karen how things are going. We review the week each Friday, and Karen helps me with the goals I haven’t been able to achieve and pushes me further with those I have. Every week she gives me new tips and is really positive.”
