"Having spent more than 10 years climbing the slippery slope in the fast-paced world of advertising, with all the attendant highs and lows, I reached a point where I felt a bit 'stuck'. Wasn't sure if I'd had my fill of the industry, what I wanted to do, where I wanted to go... was asking myself some of the big questions we all come up against from time-to-time such as "what's the point, who does what I do benefit - other than my bank account etc..." I was looking for answers but couldn't get past the questions - at around the same time, I was chatting to a girl friend who herself was in the process of doing a coaching course. We talked about it and I thought 'that sounds interesting' so when she suggested I call Karen - I thought - 'why not'?
The major benefit I found from working with a coach is having someone to help you get over your own barriers e.g., to really delve around the issues, to help you focus on what's driving them... to look beyond the obvious. I think one of the most valuable things it helped me to do was re-examine my personal values - the rules around which I make my key decisions, the things I hold dear... It really helped me move work through my stuck patch and also, and importantly, to help me find the courage to go for what was right for me - in a way that was also right for me.
In my case, it meant negotiating my way out of a role I found limiting (in a way that was positive for the company and myself) and moving overseas to take on a new challenge - ironically still in the same industry! Importantly though I understand 'why' I still enjoy what I do and have found other outlets that help me connect with my need to 'give something back'...
Karen was good at helping to sort the wood from the trees - and is a very perceptive lady who helps you to confront your own issues - head on... no hiding behind this or that excuse!
I enjoyed working with Karen - I think a real testimony to her help is that on the days I really was not in any mood to make a call or was feeling pressured or simply not in a great space - I usually came off the call thinking "ermmm... that was really helpful"!
